RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT)—Virginia’s Superintendent of Public Instruction is threatening to revoke the licenses of teachers who celebrate political violence on social media.

It all comes in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death last week. The school division said it has seen many examples celebrating or condoning the death of Charlie Kirk.

Some took to social media in support of this warning, while others believe it’s a violation of free speech.

“My first reaction is that it is a big of an overreach,” Carol Bauers, President of the Virginia Education Association said. “Teachers already feel like they are under surveillance, and the fact that they are making threats in what they are saying in their private time is not helpful to anyone and does not help with teacher retention as well.”
