opened its 99th season last weekend with the classic “Dreamgirls,” the story of the trials and tribulations of The Dreams, a fictional girls’ group similar to the real-life Supremes.

"Dreamgirls" is an intriguing glimpse into the music industry — much of it the somewhat dirtier side, paved with deceit, broken dreams and broken promises. The book, lyrics and music of the show, written by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger, are laden with many familiar songs. Some have become hits thanks in part to the film version of "Dreamgirls," which starred Jenifer Hudson in the lead role.
