MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — For years, the interchange of Interstate 91, Interstate 691 and Route 15 has been a place of congestion for drivers, and a massive project to ease the constant traffic kicked off in 2023, furthering traffic backups.
Project engineers say when the project ends, this bottleneck will be opened up.
“The bottom line really is safety, and safety comes with reducing down congestion,” Brian Mercure said, Tectonic Engineering’s resident engineer.
Mercure said that the three highways converging in Meriden can pose some potential threats to drivers.
"They're all coming to one pinch point,” said Mercure. “As soon as someone slams on their brakes, there's a curve coming on from a ramp, they hit you in the back."
A release of traffic pressure is needed.
