OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) - The Owensboro Board of Commissioners approved a new ordinance allowing backyard chickens within city limits.

The ordinance passed with a 3-2 vote.

Since May, those in Owensboro passionate about having chickens have been attending city commission meetings to plead their case.

City officials were open to the conversation, and started research on other nearby cities which allow them.

This research included asking for feedback from city residents online, to which there were mixed responses.

“Some chose to support, some chose not to support that, obviously that’s okay, that’s the way the system is supposed to work,” City Manager Nate Pagan said. “But I do feel like the majority of feedback the city received was supportive of allowing backyard chickens.”
