Some Albertans fear UCP government reprisal if they sign the Forever Canadian petition designed to quash Alberta separatism, says its lead proponent.

While those concerns are unfounded, it’s another hurdle for the campaign that’s just passed the halfway mark to its Oct. 28 deadline, Thomas Lukaszuk said Tuesday.

“It’s perceived this Alberta government is not sympathetic towards this initiative so they have second thoughts (about signing),” said Lukaszuk.

“It’s a chilling factor for sure.”

That concern also extends to those who might host or organize a petition-collecting event, said the former Progressive Conservative deputy premier.
