On Monday I interviewed Avery Lawless, winner of the 4-H Senior Division Horse Show at New Mexico State Fair at her home in East Grand Plains, southeast of Roswell.

Sarah Johnson, Avery's mother, said she noticed after the interview that it was National Day of the Cowgirl.

“So I made a post on Facebook for her and then I Googled, “define what exactly the National Day of the Cowgirls means," she said, "and it said 'to honor that authenticity, grit and resilience of American cowgirls.'”

“I really felt like that described Avery perfectly," Johnson said, "because she does have that grit and resilience and authenticity in everything that she does, whether it's FFA or horse shows or rodeos or whatever, she always is authentic and kind and true to who she is.”
