The United States has approved the potential sale of F-16 fighter jets to Peru to support the South American country's counternarcotics and counterterrorism operations.
This proposed sale will contribute to U.S. foreign policy objectives by improving the security of Peru , which is a force for political stability, peace and economic progress in South America, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a press release.
Why It Matters
On Monday, Peru was declared by the U.S. as one of the major drug transit or major illicit drug-producing countries for 2026. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the South American country is among the world's top three producers of coca bush—the plant from which coca leaves are processed to produce cocaine.
