Residents have reported feeling the earth move north of Nelson Bay, as the federal earthquake monitor registered a 3.1 magnitude tremor just before 8pm.

Geoscience Australia, the government body that measures earthquakes around the country, received just over 100 reports from residents around Bulahdelah on Wednesday evening, September 17.

Initial reports show the tremor was triggered about 10 kilometres beneath the surface at about 7.49pm, and follows an earlier quake just before 10pm the previous night.

The movement was felt as far north as Diamond Beach, according to Geoscience estimates, as well as in Maitland, Medowie, Stroud and Karuah.
