EastEnders icon Steve McFadden has broken his silence on exit rumours surrounding Phil Mitchell after his triumph at the National Television Awards.

Fans of the BBC soap are still in a celebratory mood after the veteran actor, who joined the programme in 1990, won Best Serial Performance at the annual event.

Viewers voted Steve as their winner over his co-star Jacqueline Jossa, Emmerdale ’s Eden Taylor-Draper, and Coronation Street duo Jack P Shepherd and Sue Devaney.

It was a busy year for Phil, whose battle with depression led him to check into a mental health facility after he attempted to take his own life during the programme’s 40th anniversary week.
