PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (25 News) – Village trustees in Peoria Heights have called for a vote next month to override the mayor’s veto of a 1-percent local grocery tax intended to replace a similar state tax expiring at the end of the year.

Trustees approved the tax on a 5-1 vote at their September 2nd meeting.

25 News reports Mayor Matt Wigginton’s veto is believed to be the first by a Peoria Heights mayor in at least 111 years. Wigginton called the tax “regressive” because it takes away money from people who can’t afford it.

Trustee Teresa Symmonds moved to have the board vote again at its meeting on Oct. 7th.

Trustees can override the veto with a two-thirds majority, meaning the mayor needs to win over one member to change their position.
