Despite outcry from faculty, staff, students and community members, University of Oregon Board of Trustees approved the fiscal year 2026 budget cuts that resulted in the layoff of 117 university employees .

On Sept. 8, UO announced $29.2 million in cuts to meet its budget shortfall, $24.9 million of which was in personnel reductions.

"Ultimately this vote on the budget is our job as the trustees," Board of Trustees Chair Steve Holwerda said during the meeting. "We truly appreciate every comment that's made. There were lots of things said that we agree with in terms of how difficult this is … We don't agree with everything that was said."
