HOUSTON (KIAH) — Opening statements are underway today in the trial of Tony Earls, who is facing charges related to the tragic 2022 shooting death of 9-year-old Arlene Alvarez.

According to reports, Earls was allegedly involved in an incident at an ATM where he was robbed, leading him to fire shots at a passing truck, mistakenly believing a suspect was inside.

Tragically, the Alvarez family was in that vehicle, resulting in the death of young Arlene.

Initially, a grand jury chose not to indict Earls, but subsequent investigations and the presentation of new evidence resulted in a manslaughter charge.

The trial is currently taking place at the Harris County Courthouse.
