HARLAN, Iowa —

Two people have died in a house fire in Harlan.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office reported crews responded to the fire around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

They found the home full of smoke and had reports of three people inside.

Crews found two people. They were brought outside, given medical care and first responders took them to the hospital, where they died.

The sheriff's office is not identifying them until family is notified.

A third person was not home at the time. No emergency responders were hurt.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Harlan Fire Department and State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of the deadly blaze.

In a release, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office thanked neighboring agencies that responded to their call for assistance.
