Fall River voters took to the polls on Tuesday to have their say in the preliminary election for mayor.

The top two vote-getters — incumbent Mayor Paul Coogan and Gabriel “Boomer” Amaral — are moving onto the Nov. 4 general election.

Vying for the mayorship on the Sept. 16 ballot were Coogan, Amaral, Carlos Cesar and Michael J. Vandal. Christopher Silvia also appeared on the ballot but had previously suspended his campaign.

The unofficial results are as follows:

Coogan: 3,076 votes

Amaral: 1,954 votes

Cesar: 513 votes

Vandal: 88 votes

Silva: 616

Coogan, who is seeking a third term, took office in 2019 after the embattled tenure of Jasiel Correia , the youngest mayor in the city’s history, who is now serving a six-year federal prison sentence for wire fraud and extortion.
