Tim Weah said that becoming the first American to score at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu was a "dream come true."

Weah netted his first goal for Marseille in Tuesday's Champions League defeat against Real Madrid, opening the scoring in one of the sport's most hallowed grounds.

The U.S. men's national team winger drove a first-time effort past Thibaut Courtois in the 22nd minute, giving the Ligue 1 side the lead.

Madrid would ultimately strike back, as Kylian Mbappé scored two goals from the penalty spot to give Los Blancos a 2-1 victory on the night.

Though he was disappointed to lose the game, Weah still acknowledged that his goal in Madrid was a significant moment in his career.

"Happy to score my first goal for the club, and the fans deserved it," Weah told CBS Sports after the game. "But to leave here without a win is bittersweet. I would have preferred to win the game."

He added: "It’s a pleasure. It’s a dream come true. As a kid, you dream of moments like that. There is no better club to do it with. I'm so happy to be here at Marseille."

The 25-year-old was playing in his first Champions League game with Marseille, which he joined from Juventus last month. It was his fifth appearance overall after he played in the club's first four Ligue 1 matches.

Weah joined Christian Pulisic and Johnny Cardoso as USMNT players to score against Madrid over the past four years. But Weah is the only player to do so at the Bernabéu.

“[The Bernabéu] is definitely football royalty," Weah said. "You see it and you feel it when you walk in. It is the field of dreams. It's somewhere where you want to play. Tonight we saw that from the boys, we put up a good fight and I think that's the energy you get from the Bernabéu.

"In 100 years, I didn't believe I'd play here. I grew up in Rosedale (a neighborhood in Queens, N.Y.), playing on a small turf pitch. Coming here was definitely a dream come true. I'm definitely humbled, I'm so happy to be in my position."
