The owner of the Garden City Cente r shopping center has applied to Cranston planners for approval to tear down the building now home to a Newport Creamery restaurant and replace it with a new retail space.

Newport Creamery has leased a stand-alone building on the western side of Garden City for more than 60 years, but its lease expires at the end of 2026 and the owners of the shopping center have declined to renew amid rumors they want to redevelop the space.

The Cranston Development Plan Review Committee was scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 17 to vote on approving preliminary plans for construction of a new 23,500-square-foot "for multiple mixed-use retail tenants."
