DJ Soul Sister is 50.
Technically, it’s Melissa Weber who recently turned 50. Her DJ Soul Sister alter ego is as timeless as the old-school funk and R&B she spins on vinyl during her long-running Saturday night “Soul Power” show on WWOZ-FM and at her gigs across town.
“You know that old adage that you’re not supposed to ask a woman her age? I love telling people I’m 50,” she says. “I’m still having fun doing what I love.”
On Saturday, she hosts her 19th annual Birthday Jam at Tipitina’s, which will also be a tribute to the Gap Band. After an opening set by DJ Soul Sister, power trio The Nth Power and special guests – blues-based guitarist Eric Gales, Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville and Tony Hall, saxophonist Skerik and more – will pump out Gap Band classics.
