Braxton Winston, who served three terms on Charlotte City Council, has been elected to lead North Carolina’s largest labor organization: the N.C. State American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).

Convention delegates elected Winston during the organization’s 68th Annual Convention on Sept. 13. He will succeed MaryBe McMillan, who retired from the ALF-CIO after two decades.

Winston said in a post on social media platform X, formally known as Twitter, that he is honored to have the privilege of leading the “strongest and most inclusive labor movement in the American South.”

Winston came to prominence in Charlotte during street protests following the police killing of Keith Lamont Scott in 2016. He holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Davidson
