Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes agreed to rein in $1 million the state Legislature wanted to give to a Phoenix horse racetrack this year as part of a deal to quell a lawsuit.
The agreement, which still needs to be approved by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Michael Herrod, would halt a years-long appropriation of millions in taxpayer funds to Arizona horse tracks and declare the latest was unconstitutional. Since 2021, the nearly 70-year-old Turf Paradise in Phoenix has received $11 million from the state. Tracks in Prescott and Tucson received more than $2 million.
