Forecasters predict the system will strengthen into a hurricane over the weekend.

Current forecast models show the storm turning north and remaining away from Sarasota and Manatee County, Florida.

Tropical Depression 7 became Tropical Storm Gabrielle on Sept. 17, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters predict it will become a hurricane over the weekend. If it does, that will make it the second hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season. Erin became a hurricane Aug. 15, four days after become a tropical storm.

Gabrielle is the seventh named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. Maximum sustained winds were near 45 mph as of the hurricane center's 11 a.m. update.
