81-year-old man identified as victim of officer-involved shooting in New Haven

An 81-year-old man was identified today as the victim who died in a police-action shooting in New Haven, the Allen County Coroner's Office said.

William Joseph Peters of Fort Wayne died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled homicide – police action shooting. His death is the 29th homicide this year in Allen County, a news release said.

The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. Friday when an Allen County Sheriff's Department deputy investigated a vehicle parked in what police called a suspicious area near Schwartz and Irving roads.

Peters was reportedly armed with a gun when the officer approached the vehicle, a Saturday news release said. The officer called for backup, and others from the sheriff's department, Fort Wayne Police Department and Indiana State Police arrived
