ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - The need in Roanoke isn’t hidden; it’s right outside your door. Tuesday, dozens showed up to help.

From sorting clothes and food to making sure our youth have a safe place to learn, United Way ’s Day of Caring brought out volunteers ready to roll up their sleeves and make an impact.

“You really can’t go outside this door and not see the need,” Michelle Fernatt, a United Way volunteer, said. ”Right, you can’t walk out this door and not see that there’s a need.”

Fernatt knows firsthand the importance of stepping up, not just noticing the need, but acting on it.

She’s is no stranger to volunteering and remembers her first time collecting money for the American Red Cross.

“Back then,” Fernatt said, ”you were a kid. You’d go door to door. I don’t think they are do
