Montrose's iconic rainbow crosswalks — the first such landmark in Texas recognizing LGBTQ+ residents — are gone for now and could be for the foreseeable future. Officials with METRO, which is repaving the Houston intersection where the colorful crosswalks are located, say they're waiting for a review of "recent federal guidelines" before committing to bringing them back.

METRO, a public transit agency serving the region, told Houston Public Media on Wednesday that it's "prepared to restore the rainbow crosswalk striping at Westheimer and Taft to its pre-repair condition. We are currently awaiting the City of Houston and METRO leadership's review of recent federal guidelines and stakeholder feedback before proceeding."
