UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Union County detectives worked to prevent an elderly woman from being the latest victim in a fraud scheme -- and are sharing tips for how you can protect yourself from these scams.

Scammers, posing as representatives from the woman's bank, allegedly tricked the woman into clicking a link that secretly installed malicious software on her phone and computer. The software gives the scammers access to her accounts. They then convinced her to withdraw $14,000 in cash and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM at a convenience store in Indian Trail.
