A round of heavy thunderstorms across Iowa has left thousands of MidAmerican Energy customers in the Des Moines metro without power.

Thunderstorms began in Des Moines around 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, with showers and thunderstorms expected heading into the night and into the early morning Thursday.

How many MidAmerican power outages were reported?

MidAmerican Energy reported 8,706 customers in the Des Moines area are without power as of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

That number was already decreasing, with only 8,000 without power as of 2:50 p.m.
