OTTAWA — The public safety minister announced that details regarding the Liberal government’s gun buyback program will be unveiled in the coming weeks. Minister Gary Anandasangaree stated that the government will soon provide information about the next steps and the operational aspects of the program.

Anandasangaree expressed confidence that collection facilities will be established in Ontario, despite the Ontario Provincial Police's decision not to participate directly in the initiative. He mentioned that other police forces have already agreed to take part, although he did not specify which ones.

The gun buyback program was a promise made by the Liberals during the spring federal election, aimed at efficiently managing the buyback of banned firearms. The grace period that allows individuals to possess certain prohibited firearms without penalty is set to expire on October 30.

As the deadline approaches, the government is under pressure to finalize the program's details and ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place for the buyback process.
