Campaign contributions from an out-of-state organization that does not disclose the sources of its money continues to cause controversy in the Alabama attorney general’s race.

Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell, one of three Republican candidates, has criticized opponent Katherine Robertson for accepting $1.1 million in campaign funds from First Principles Action, Inc., a Tennessee-based nonprofit.

Mitchell has called the funds “dark money” because First Principles Action is not required to disclose its donors.

Robertson has defended her acceptance of the money from the organization, which was founded in November by Peter Bisbee, former executive director of the Republican Attorneys General Association.

The contributions make up the largest portion of the $1.77 mill
