(SavorNation) – Mark your calendar for Thursday, Sept. 18, and make room for lots of meat and cheese, because restaurant chains across the nation are offering half-priced burgers and burger BOGOs for National Cheeseburger Day.

National Cheeseburger Day is not to be confused with National Burger Day, which is held on May 28 and celebrates the cheese-less version of the burger. Cheese or no cheese, Americans are estimated to consume 50 billion burgers each year.

Lionel Sternberger is credited as the inventor of the cheeseburger, after he added cheese to a hamburger in 1924 at his father’s restaurant in Pasadena, California. However, Charles Kaelin is the first in recorded history to use the word “cheeseburger” in 1934 at his restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky.
