WINNESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a fraudulent check cashing scam.

The sheriff’s office says they have received multiple reports of fraud involving payment checks sent through the mail.

In this scam, the scammer steals a check from the mail, forges it, rewrites the payment amount to make it longer, and then cashes it.

Authorities said this scam has been frequently seen when mailing payments to credit card companies.

The sheriff’s office reports a rapid increase in this scam throughout the community and surrounding counties. Be cautious when sending payments through the mail.
