KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dallas Cowboys legend and Knoxville native, Dwight "D.D." Lewis, has died at the age of 79.
According to a release from the Cowboys, he was all-time leader in postseason games played after being drafted in 1968. The team described him as "one of the most underappreciated players in franchise history."
"After a one-year military stint, he returned to the team in 1970, serving as a backup to Chuck Howley before stepping into the starting lineup in 1973," the team said.
His hometown is listed as Knoxville, where he attended Fulton High School, according to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
The website said he played for the university from 1964-1968, earning SEC All-Sophomore Team in 1965, All-SEC in 1966-67 and was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1967.
