A Modesto-based cheese and dairy company has filed for bankruptcy after being shut down by the federal government.

Rizo-Lopez Foods filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday.

The backstory: The U.S. Department of Justice received a federal court order in October of last year to shut down Rizo-Lopez Foods. • Rizo-Lopez Foods violated the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) at its Modesto facility by manufacturing and distributing adulterated food products. • Cotija cheese and other cheeses, yogurt, sour cream and other foods were sold under the brand names Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, Rizo Bros, Rio Grande, Food City, El Huache, La Ordena, San Carlos, Campesino, Santa Maria, Dos Ranchitos, Casa Cardenas and 365 Whole Foods Market. • Overall, 23 people were hospitalized and t
