TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating after a "suspicious explosive device" was discovered inside a Tiverton resident's garage Wednesday morning.

Officers were called to a home off Riverside Drive after receiving a report regarding the suspected device.

The device was initially determined to be a 3 1/4-inch projectile, according to police. Officers evacuated residents in other nearby homes as a precaution and reached out to the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal's Explosives Operations Disposal Unit for assistance.

Police said explosives specialists conducted an X-ray of the device and identified it as an armor-piercing shell.
