The one-year anniversary of Tropical Storm Helene hitting Western North Carolina is not far away. Unlike last year, residents can breathe a bit easier when it comes to the weather this week.

A year ago, on Sept. 17, 2024, the National Hurricane Center flagged a disturbance that would become Hurricane Helene and cause catastrophic damage as it trekked from Florida to North Carolina, and it was just being talked about. Before the storm even took shape, the Carolinas were drenched in rain that had rivers swelling, and warnings of possible flooding were coming from meteorologists.

In 2025, after months of grieving and rebuilding, the mountains can expect a bit of sunshine through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
