A man has died following a shooting incident in Clissold Park, Stoke Newington, north London. The Metropolitan Police reported that officers were dispatched shortly after 7pm on Wednesday, 17 September, to respond to the emergency.
Paramedics treated both a man and a woman, both in their 40s, at the scene. The man was later pronounced dead in hospital, while the woman's condition remains unknown.
The police stated, "Officers responded to reports of a shooting in Clissold Park, N16 at 19:06hrs. A woman in her 40s was treated by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance. She was taken to hospital, where she remains and we await an update on her condition. A man in his 40s also received treatment for gunshot wounds. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was later pronounced deceased at hospital. Enquiries are ongoing to identify his next of kin."
A firearm believed to be involved in the incident was recovered at the scene. Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter, overseeing policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, indicated that the two individuals were known to each other. He described the incident as an "isolated incident" and reassured the public that there is no wider risk.
Richter stated, "We understand this is a deeply distressing incident for those involved, the witnesses in the park and the community in the surrounding area. We are in the early stages of the investigation, but we believe the man and woman are known to one another and at this time, we are treating it as an isolated incident. Officers are working at pace to establish the full circumstances of the incident and will continue to support those who are affected. A crime scene remains in place for investigation with an increased police presence."
The incident has sparked concern in the local community, with many taking to social media to express their shock and condolences. One witness remarked, "I came here to check what was happening! So many sirens!!! I can’t believe someone has been shot in Clissold Park - that’s horrific!!!"
The investigation is ongoing as police continue to gather information and support those impacted by the tragedy.
