Just as health officials announced a dizzying rollout of updated COVID-19 shots, cases and hospitalizations of the virus seem to be ticking up again.

It’s a predictable outcome as fall and respiratory virus season arrive, say experts. In Allegheny County, COVID infections and hospitalizations hit a low in mid-June, and infections have now jumped from a few dozen recorded cases to more than 100 a week, per Allegheny County Health Department data.

Infections reported by the health department may represent an undercount, as not everyone who is sick tests themselves for COVID, and even fewer report that positive test for the record keepers.

These numbers are reflected in what doctors are seeing in the clinic.
