PITTSBURGH, PA (WTVO/WQRF) — For the first time since 2020 the Chicago Cubs will participate in the MLB Playoffs. Wednesday afternoon they clinched a Wild-card spot by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4. The Cubs struck for four runs in the top of the first inning thanks to back-to-back home runs by Ian Happ and Moises Ballesteros. Happ later had an RBI single. He also caught a fly ball in left field for the final out of the game. Matthew Boyd was the Cubs starting pitcher. He lasted only three innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits, but four Cubs’ relief pitchers shut down the Pirates the rest of the game. Taylor Rogers closed out the game by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
