It was Saturday night on Labour Day weekend when Jason Jacques’ phone rang.

It was the Prime Minister’s Office looking for a parliamentary budget officer to carry over for the next six months.

“You receive a phone call on a Saturday night over a long weekend and someone purporting to be from the Prime Minister’s Office, it might actually be real,” Jacques, the interim PBO, told a parliamentary committee on Sept. 16.
