Robert Redford, the iconic actor and philanthropist, has died. He was 89. Known for his work in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, Redford would go on to create an organization to champion independent voices in film in 1981. Four years later, he took over the U.S. Film & Video Festival, renaming it the Sundance Film Festival. Redford was passionate about highlighting underrepresented voices and independent creatives.

That tradition has continued throughout the decades.
