MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Republican group is planning an event to welcome the National Guard to Memphis.

The event is planned Thursday at 6 p.m. in the parking lot across from Mission Church on Briarcrest Avenue in East Memphis.

Supporters are encouraged to bring "flags, signs, and Memphis swag to show the country that Shelby County thanks President Trump and Governor Bill Lee for sending the National Guard to Memphis!"

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum Monday establishing a Memphis Safe Task Force to combat violent crime, and suggested troops might be in the city in a matter of weeks.

The effort will send National Guard to the city, along with resources from the FBI, ATF, DEA and other federal law enforcement agencies, to combat crime, which he said was the highest in the nation. T
