CONCORD, N.H. —

Federal funds are being zeroed out for a program that helps disadvantaged children in New Hampshire go to college.

The Trump Administration informed state officials of that decision this week, but Gov. Kelly Ayotte said she wants to see the funding restored.

Making the jump to higher education and a four-year college can be difficult, and the federal TRIO programs aim to smooth that transition for low-income students, many of them the first in their families to go to college.

The programs provide basic help, from advising services and tutoring to financial aid assistance. But this week, the U.S. Department of Education informed the university system it was pulling a $1.2 million TRIO grant, halting funds at the end of this month.
