GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —

A former Grand Rapids restaurant owner will spend a year on probation after initially being charged with assault .

Leo Beil, former owner of Leo’s Seafood on Ottawa Avenue NW, was charged with felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a loaded firearm in a car. All but the loaded firearm charge was dismissed in a plea.

Beil’s attorney, Jeff Crampton, said Beil was defending himself after going to solve a squatter problem for a friend.

“I have known Mr. Beil for 30 plus years, and you will never find someone more fiercely loyal than Leo Beil when you got a call from a friend of his, saying that some squatters that were living in her house, and she thought they were posing a danger,” Crampton said.
