NEWPORT, Vt. (WCAX) - State corrections officers are sharing their story of juggling long hours with family as the department deals with major staffing concerns.
Serina Zahn has been a correctional officer at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport for nearly two decades. She says that while she loves the challenge of the work, consecutive 16-hour days have become the new normal.
It comes as union officials this week tell WCAX there are only around 50 correctional officers working at the Newport prison when full staffing should be 80 employees.
