HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - After twenty years in this community, the John Rolfe YMCA is shutting it’s doors.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, and the last day it will be open will be Oct. 31.

It’s a decision that is stunning many people in the community.

“I was dumbfounded,” Lennart Strumberg, a long-time gym member, said.

Strumberg said since he retired in 2009, he has been coming to this YMCA location to workout multiple times a week. In that time, he said, the gym has become more like a family, including hosting many philanthropic events throughout the years.

“I couldn’t believe this would happen in this community,” Strumberg said.
