DAVIS, Calif. —
Davis is testing new temporary safety enhancements on Fifth Street to address a series of crashes, particularly at the intersection of Fifth and J streets, with the potential for permanent implementation if effective.
Between January 2020 and January 2025, there have been 23 crashes on Fifth Street that resulted in injury or property damage, with 20 occurring at the intersection of Fifth and J streets.
The city is testing temporary safety enhancements that restrict left-hand turns onto Fifth Street from I, J, and K streets.
If these measures reduce the number of crashes, they will be made permanent. The city said one of the benefits of this low-cost approach to safety upgrades is the ability to make modifications quickly and easily.
