HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) — For young people across New York City, teen violence is a chilling reality.

"The people being shot out in the street are my age," 18-year-old Chailing Jorge told PIX11 News. "It's really sad, terrible and heartbreaking to me."

Some feel like they are running out of safe spaces when, at any given moment, a shooting can occur.

In East Harlem, police say two teens were shooting at each other on East 123rd Street on Monday night. When officers arrived, one fired several rounds. Both teens were charged, according to officials.

"This is becoming intense because the shootings are happening more often," Dr. Iesha Sekou of Street Corner Resources said.

NYPD crime stats show shootings involving young people are up, with victims under the age of 18 up 80% since 2018.
