GRAYSON, Ky. (WSAZ) - A police department in the area has new technology to help keep people safe.

The Grayson Police Department now has body cameras and access to a nationwide database. It allows officers to quickly check criminal history, driving records, and other data -- all right in their cruisers.

“The beautiful part about these bodycams, it’s open to transparency and here at the Grayson Police Department, we’re very open,” said Sgt. Kyle Smith. “We want to be open with the public and we want to hold officers accountable if we need to hold them accountable.”

The database is called the National Crime Information Center or “NCIC.” The database gets vital information to officers in a matter of seconds. Smith said they can get behind a car and quickly get the information the need in a
