SOUTH PLAINFIELD (WABC) -- New Jersey police officers were working on firearms training when they suddenly heard cries for help from a man who was in distress.

William Ritchey is making amazing progress following a freak accident that left his leg pinned underneath his pickup truck while making a routine drop off at his local DPW yard.

He backed into the pile of debris, but needed more space.

"I went to step on the brake and it, like, knocked me down. And then the seatbelt grabbed me, grabbed my leg and I'm spread eagle and it just drove right up my leg," Ritchey said.

The worker at the yard rushed over and moved the vehicle off of Ritchey's foot.
