Santa Maria residents, community organizers and immigrant advocates implored the City Council Tuesday to create an immigration ad hoc committee and join legal and legislative efforts to address the impact of increased immigration enforcement.

More than 25 people spoke on the topic following a rally outside City Hall before the meeting, but while the item was agendized for discussion, the Council received the comments and moved the discussion item to Oct. 21 due to the absence of Councilmember Maribel Aguilera-Hernandez

Of the 26 people, all but one spoke in favor of creating the committee. One advocated for supporting Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts.
