BOSTON — Injured Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu (left oblique strain) will sprint and take part in baseball activities Wednesday.
It is unlikely Abreu — who faced live pitching for the first time Monday — will be activated from the 10-day injured list for the final game of Boston’s homestand Thursday.
“Doesn’t look like it will be tomorrow,” manager Alex Cora said before Boston’s game against the Athletics on Wednesday . “So we just have to be patient.”
Asked whether Abreu could be activated when the Red Sox play the Rays in Tampa this weekend, Cora replied, “Hopefully, yeah.”
Abreu has been on the injured list since Aug. 21. Initially, he was confident he would avoid the IL , believing he needed only two days of rest before returning. However, his timetable has been pushed bac
