California lawmakers have approved SB-627, a bill that would ban local law enforcement officers from wearing masks on duty except in limited cases such as undercover work, SWAT operations, or medical needs. The measure, authored by Senator Scott Wiener, was introduced amid concerns over federal immigration enforcement. The Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) is urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to veto the bill, arguing it creates liability issues, hurts officer recruitment, and endangers safety. The Department of Homeland Security also opposes the proposal, warning it could expose officers and their families to retaliation. Newsom has not yet said whether he will sign the bill.
